I hear you knocking . . .
This Hairy woodpecker, who could actually be a Downy, was caught on camera when I heard him knocking around on the dead part of the dogwood tree out front. The difference between the Hairy and the Downy is a matter of about 3 inches, with the Hairy being the larger of the two at around 9 inches in length.
Ok. That's the end of today's lesson.

LOL, I can't always tell them apart either. But I love both of them. They are so busy and, well, noisy I guess too. Lovely shot. I like the filter light in it.
Excellent capture. I don't think I've ever seen a Hairy. Only smaller ones which I thought were Downeys, and apparently I was correct.
oh he's a beauty whatever he is! Great photo, wonderful light! :)
Hairy or Downy.. he's a wonderful capture ...

What a pretty birdie! Arrived via Black Boxes - delighted to meet you. I seem to be spending all day playing with the little black box.
Hairy or Downy he's beautiful. My grandma used to be a bird watcher and I never understood it as a kid. But between you and Abe Lincoln I'm totally starting to understand why she saw so much beauty in them.
Great shot as always!
*hugs*
What a Beautiful shot! Simply beautiful............
Welcomem to Dave and to Deserthen! So glad you stopped by. And yes, that little black box can be addicting.
Thanks, all.

Oh, just a gorgeous photo of a lovely bird! I've never seen one of these. We have an occasional red-headed woodpecker here.
It's so hard to tell those two apart!
