Evil-doer

Photobucket
Don't be fooled by the lovely lilac color of this awful plant. I found this thistle while walking with George last week. It's a terribly invasive weed that is so difficult to control that it's been outlawed in Maryland. I was surprised to see it growing here. Pennsylvania has a no-propagation law, but I don't think you can be fined here for having it on your property. Back in 1882, a Garrett County, MD law was passed stating that no landowner, tenant or roads supervisor shall allow the growth of Canada thistle. They were serious, too, with a fine of $10.00 a day if not controlled. That was an exhorbitant fee for someone living in 1882!

They do look pretty though. I'm just glad I don't have any growing in my yard. Great shot. It looks like the spiders don't mind the "evil" neighbor.

I know the trouble these cause from my ranchin' days.

I just noticed a ton of these on my way back from shopping today!

B-a-u-t-ful pic!

So invasive it's been banned?

Strange that I hardly ever see Canada thistle - and I live in Canada. *L* Certainly not as many as other types of thistles.

How interesting! We see them occasionally in NJ, but I don't think they are illegal! I can understand how they spread quickly, though -- the puffy seed heads explode into many tiny travellers...

It is beautiful, though, and your photo is marvelous! :)
